This is the first book in a series. I have seen a lot of the author's books on lists of books that I enjoy. I like quirky stories and characters. The description sounded right up my alley. I thought it would be similar to Dear Committee Members, which I really loved. Certainly, there were glimpses of the things I liked about that book in this one. The main character is a bit pompous and not aware of it. The things he encounters are just over-the-top. But as much as I wanted to love it, I just never got into it.
